The Story Behind the Pen

How could a pen mean so much? You know the kind with 4 colors that you can click between each one. It goes back a long time ago when I was knee high to a grasshopper.

Each year our family traveled to Preston Idaho and Rexburg Idaho and stayed a week at each place. We would have the opportunity to fish and hunt with our Grandpa in Rexburg, and help our Grandpa in Preston with his horses and veterinary duties.

We always attended church wherever we were. We happened to be in Preston and sitting towards the back of the chapel. I turned back and saw who I thought was my Grandma. I am guessing I was around 8 years old or so. I waived at her with excitement, then my sister said that it wasn’t my grandma, and that it was her twin.

“Yeah right” I said “sure it is” sarcastically back to her.

She said, “it is, I promise.”

I said, “No way, that’s Grandma.”

Well the meeting continued, and I said to my sister “I will prove it to you that its Grandma.”

I crawled under the bench and gave my grandma a hug and asked her if she had a pen I could write with. Sure enough she pulled out a pen with a light blue barrel and a white top that had four colors of ink that you could choose (red, black, green, and blue). I crawled back under the pew and said to my sister, “see I told you it was Grandma, she always lets me draw with this pen.” Mic drop :) My sister I am sure rolled her eyes at me.

Well the meeting got over and I had drawn some great pictures. I didn’t crawl under the pew this time but went over to my Grandma and lo and behold (threw those words in because we were at church) there were two Grandmas! Say what!?! I am sure the look on my face told the whole story. My real Grandma gave me a big hug and kiss. I showed her the pen in disbelief and she pulled out a matching pen from her purse. My siblings may have teased me about this for a bit.

The pen I have now adays isnt quite the same but I still love it to mark up the books I read in my morning studies. Not only because it has four colors in one pen, but more importantly it reminds me of my Grandma!

I hope this Christmas season you take time to remember and ponder on the ones that make you happy and those little memories that transport you back in time. Merry Christmas!
